The Fundación Santa María, a non-profit institution located in Bogotá,
was founded in 1922 as a neighborhood school. Today, it provides 500
low-income girls and boys with high-quality private elementary
education as well as first-rate health services, available also to the
surrounding community.
The institution seeks to address the needs of the
individual as a whole, by providing each child with individualized
education; psychological guidance and speech therapy as needed;
supplemental meals; medical and dental check-ups; family therapy; and
occupational and recreational activities.
In its educational program, the school emphasizes the
importance of hygiene and healthy habits, moral values, and protection
of the environment.
The Fundación Santa María relies almost in its
entirety on private contributions and receives minimal government
support. However, using an innovative model, the medical center, by
providing services to third parties outside of the immediate community,
serves as a source of income for the foundation.
A recurring grant from the Genesis Foundation has
funded the program "Orientation and Prevention for Children and Their
Families" that provides psychological and social counseling to students
and their families, as well as speech therapy, medical and dental care,
and nutritional assistance.
