Fundación Manuel Mejia is a private nonprofit organization created by
the coffee trade union (gremio cafetero) whose mission is to provide tools to
people in rural areas in order to improve the well-being, competitiveness, and
sustainability of their communities. In its 40-year history, Fundación Manuel
Mejia has been dedicated to formal and informal education of the rural
population, thereby contributing to the improvement in the quality and
relevance of the education in Colombia.
With support from the Organización Internacional para la Migraciones
(OIM), Fundación Manuel Mejia has developed a project called, “Juventud
Rural, Educación y Desarrollo Rural” in four agricultural training
institutions located in Putumayo, Cauca, and Huila.
The project’s purpose is to provide the young people of these areas with
an education that equips them with the necessary social and vocational
competencies to succeed in their environments. The organization seeks to
achieve this aim through the improvement of pedagogical components, as well as
rural and institutional development. An important component of this
project is the creation of a set of didactical and pedagogical tools used to
increase access to education for those living in rural areas, reduce the
percentages of students dropping out of school, and promote a more
comprehensive learning of basic skills for rural youngsters.
The Genesis Foundation has been supporting this
project since 2006, hoping that this model can be replicated in other regions
of the country that face a critical need to improve their quality of education.
