Fundación Compartir

Location: Bogotá Colombia

Fundación Compartir is a non-profit organization founded in 1979 by members of the private sector.  The organization promotes and executes projects to reduce social inequality and improve the lives of those in Colombia with scarce economic resources. The programs fall into one of four categories.  The first and most urgently needed is housing, for without shelter, little else can be accomplished.  The second, micro-business, is aimed at targeting the unemployment problem faced by many in society. The third category is education, offered at the preschool, elementary and high school levels. The fourth is the beautification of public space, thus allowing residents to take pride in their neighborhood.

Fundacíon Compartir works in alliance with the Colombian Institute for Family Welfare in the administration of preschools. Moreover, the organization has constructed 30 schools around the country and is actively administering three of them in order to guarantee their sustainability. In addition, the foundation created the ‘Premio Compartir al Maestro’ encouraging the value of teachers and the intrinsic role they play in improving the quality of education. Fundación Compartir has enjoyed much recognition throughout Colombia on account of this award.

The most recent school Compartir has constructed in Bogotá is the ‘Institución Educativa Compartir Tintal’.  The majority of the over 1,000 students attending this school come from families with scare economic resources. The school is implementing innovative programs to assure it provides high quality education. For instance, the computer room has turned into a wonderful space for instructive activities. This classroom, supported by Genesis since 2006, offers not only basic computer skills training, but also internet workshops, guidance to orient students’ professional lives, interactive activities to supplement classroom instruction, and workshops in basic computer skills for parents during the weekends. This new focus given to the computer room promotes the use of technology as a means for the students’ development and expression of their own ideas.  Students will be able to make art with computers, produce videos, and construct web pages.
