Fundación Minicol, founded in 1994,
serves more than 800 children in 12 centers in eight departments in Colombia. Many
of them are challenged not only by a lack of economic resources but have been
physically and emotionally abused, malnourished, abandoned, displaced, or
suffer physical and mental handicaps. Given the tremendous obstacles these
children face, it comes as no surprise that by the time they arrive at Minicol,
these children show tremendous learning deficits.
The Foundation’s mission is to offer academic opportunities for children
touched by violence or who live in unfavorable conditions. To accomplish its
goal, the organization offers quality academic instruction from the pre-school
level through grade five. Assistance is not limited to academic instruction;
additionally, students receive complementary services such as primary health
care, psychological and auditory treatment, lunch and snacks throughout the
day, school uniforms, and participate in recreational activities, as well as
prevocational training courses in areas such as carpentry and crafts. Families
also receive support from the organization, taking advantage of trainings in
different manual labors and parenting courses. The organization works in
alliance with a high-school program where their students are transferred to
complete secondary education, in order to guarantee children’s permanence in
the educational system.
Since 2005, Genesis Foundation has
provided funds for one of its centers in La Guajira, which benefits more than
170 children every year.
