East Harlem Tutorial Program
  Location: East Harlem-New York, USA

Since its inception in 1958, the East Harlem Tutorial Program (EHTP) continues to provide quality educational after school programs to children ages five through nineteen. EHTP seeks to guide each child through his or her personal development, ensuring that their students not only succeed academically, but develop their creative sides as well.

What sets EHTP apart is its consideration of each child as an individual with unique academic and developmental needs. Through the use of formal and informal assessments, interviews, and other evaluation data, a collaborative effort between parents, teachers, and students helps EHTP develop programs tailored to the distinct academic, creative and developmental requirements of each child.  Before a child’s participation in the program can begin, he or she is assessed for math and literacy, thereby establishing a personal baseline.

All activities and services run by EHTP center on developing strong literacy skills, the exploration of arts and technology, promoting math skills, and encouraging youth development and community building.  The organization’s wide range of programs include: homework help; small study-groups led by academic specialists; dance, drama, and film-making workshops; youth development activities such as activism, volunteering, and youth governance; college and career preparation; and sports such as karate and basketball.

This wide range of activities has attracted hundreds of children throughout New York City.  Although EHTP has no official restrictions for participation (geographic or otherwise), the majority of the several hundred children participating are Latinos living in East Harlem.
