Corporación Huellas de la Esperanza
Project Description
La Corporación Educativa Huellas de la Esperanza is an educational institution located in the municipality of Malambo in the department (state) of Atlántico. It belongs to the Colombian Caribbean Region, which is characterized for its low education results and for having one of the biggest displaced populations due to internal armed conflict.
The school Huellas offers formal education from preschool to 5th grade, offering three levels for early childhood education and five for elementary school. Today, 620 children are being benefited with its educational model, which focuses on conceptual pedagogy.
This model establishes a clear and consistent training process based on the pedagogical, anthropological, and sociological needs of the children. The model has a learning route that covers all the evolutionary phases of the human mind, which consists of the emotional, cognitive and expressive phases.
Level: Preschool and elementary school
Starting Date: 2006
Previous Implementations: Barranquilla
Active regions 2012: Barranquilla
Direct beneficiaries 2012: 620 students, 18 teachers, 2 schools, 522 families
Partners: Genesis Foundation, Fundación Huellas
Methodology
1. Pedagogical Model
The school focuses on the pedagogical model of conceptual pedagogy. This model orientates and defines the strategies to follow in the learning and teaching processes with the children.
2. Classroom Projects
In order to achieve the objectives proposed by the conceptual pedagogy, Corporación Educativa Huellas de la Esperanza works with different classroom projects in each grade. These projects articulate what is being learned; they generate a playful and didactic learning environment and involve parents and family members in the process.
The classroom projects are the following:
- ORCHARD: vegetable crops
- BUTTERFLY GARDEN: butterfly farming
- WORMS: worm farming.
- ACQUARIUM: taking care of the fishes.
- FLOWERS: growing flowers
- HEN HOUSE: raising hens.
Everything that the children learn is articulated to the classroom project, thus it becomes a practical and playful way to learn and to put into practice all the acquired knowledge. One of the most important results that have been achieved is that parents have been involved in the projects and they have developed a sense of belonging with them as it is a useful way to share their knowledge with their children.
3. Evaluation
After 3 years of Huellas’ work with the support of Genesis, one of the most important results is the creation of an evaluation system with both qualitative and quantitative indicators. The evaluation is carried out at the beginning of each school year, at midterm and at the end of the year. This allows Huellas to have results regarding the progress of the program so that improvements can be made. Also, it is important as it shows the results that the children are achieving at the end of every school year.
Annual cost per student: US$60
