This event will showcase the Colombian Youth Philharmonic in concert at the state of the art concert hall of the New Wold Center in Miami Beach on September 28th, 2012. 

Composed of young musicians from different social backgrounds, the Colombian Youth Philharmonic is truly a reflection of the new Colombia where all can be given an opportunity to excel. Through a spectacular musical performance these young musicians hope to raise funds that will not only benefit their music program, but will also help to inspire excellence and to provide better opportunities for children and young Colombians in underserved communities. 

With their instruments, the young musicians will be the spokespersons for thousands children in need of a good education and better opportunities.

Since 2009 the program Learning to Learn was introduced as a playful and innovative pedagogical program that provides quality education by improving teaching skills and by strengthening the thinking and reasoning processes of students. Marta as well as 4 other teachers were curious about the program, but also worried about the extra time it demanded.

The training team easily established a strong working relationship with the group of teachers.  Marta and her colleagues realized that Learning to Learn is not simply a set of toys and manuals for students, but rather it seeks to change the way teachers teach through the use of a playful methodology and the appropriation of theoretical knowledge of thinking and reasoning in children.

With the introduction of the program and the use of toys with a pedagogical purpose, Marta started to see positive changes developing in her classroom.  Her students had a better attitude towards learning, and the use of toys creates a nontraditional learning-teaching environment and allowed the children to create and participate actively in their learning process. The general classroom atmosphere changed and conflicts decreased which enabled Marta to establish better relationships with her students through innovative strategies and tools, and to improve her pedagogical skills.

The national goal in 2012 is to transition from models based solely on attention to a quality model based on national standards. The Colombian Institute for Family Welfare (ICBF) and local governments are supporting the expansion. We are also establishing alliances with the private sector to broaden coverage and have greater impact.

This program designed and validated for 3 years is one of the high-quality models for comprehensive early childhood care in Colombia and is contributing to the goal of providing education to 1.200.000 children under 5 years of age who live under extreme poverty conditions.

Thanks to your generosity we raised $19,000 to provide nutrition to the 125 children in our First Learning Steps preschool in Santa Marta, Colombia!
