Numerario
Project Description
Is a pedagogical and didactic model that promotes the development of mathematical thinking in teachers and students from preschool to third grade. Numerario seeks to strengthen the construction of mathematical thinking in children (numerical, spatial, metrical and random) in order to improve their abilities to solve problems and to generate in them a positive disposition for learning and enjoying mathematics.
Level: Preschool and Elementary School
Starting Date of the project: 2009
Previous implementations: Antioquia (Sabaneta, Copacabana, Barbosa, Girardota), Medellin, Cundinamarca (Funza, Mosquera, Sopó, Madrid), Soacha and Cartagena
Active regions 2012: Medellín, Antioquia (Caldas, La Estrella, La Unión), Cundinamarca (Funza, Mosquera, Sopó, Madrid), Soacha and Cartagena
Direct Beneficiaries 2012: 47,507 students, 1,244 teachers, 88 schools
Partners 2012: Genesis Foundation, Fundación Corona and Negocios Corona
Justification
Mathematics develops logic and structured thinking. The discipline that children develop in math classes can be translated to their daily lives as it helps them to create a logic focus to see possible results and solutions to specific situations and problems. Mathematics allows children to reason, to develop a sense of space, and to make connections, estimations, solve problems and communicate ideas.
Methodology
TEACHERS TRAINING: An initial diagnosis of mathematical skills of teachers is elaborated, and then teacher’s previous classroom experiences and knowledge are used to improve their pedagogical methods and strengthen their teaching skills in the classroom through new teaching strategies.
WORK WITH STUDENTS: Teachers motivate their students to improve their math’s skills through innovative activities. These activities improve children’s mathematical, critical and logical thinking.
WORK WITH PARENTS: The project involves parents by promoting their participation in the learning process of their children by encouraging them to improve their mathematical skills.
Annual cost per student: US$ 10
